The character of simple textiles

Colour is only one part of what a fabric brings to a room.

Look at the weave

Hold a sample toward the light and notice its density, texture and irregularities. Two fabrics in a similar colour can create very different impressions because of the way they reflect light.

Plan for actual use

A textile needs to suit the way it will be handled. Read care labels, consider how often it will be washed and decide whether a crease is a problem or part of its character. Everyday practicality is a design consideration, not an afterthought.

Change one layer

Before replacing everything, try changing a cushion cover or a small tablecloth. Live with it for a week. A modest adjustment is easier to assess than a room changed all at once, and it leaves more room for personal preference to emerge.
