Keeping a sketchbook without a project

A few lines are enough to make the act of looking more deliberate.

Draw what is already there

A chair, the corner of a window or the shape of a shadow is enough. There is no need to find an impressive subject. Ordinary things offer a chance to notice proportion without the pressure of producing a finished picture.

Set a small limit

Choose a few minutes or one page. A limited space can be freeing because it makes the exercise finite. Stop when the time is up, even if the drawing feels unresolved.

Keep the imperfect pages

A sketchbook is a record of attention, not a portfolio. The awkward drawing can show what you found difficult and what became easier later. Date a page if you like, then turn it over and begin again.
